Looking to save old display salt water and wanted to know how to do it. Reason being, is that I would like to add it to a new back up aquarium

Just curious why not just make new saltwater? Nothing really beneficial in keeping the old water to be honest. Unless you wanna saving some money. Then I would just store in rubbermaid containers with some water movement.

Im down to make new water! Would using old water and liverock benefit for the biofilter?

How would you setup an sps qt?

All your biofilter is encysted upon the rocks and sand.
If you want to keep anything beneficial, save the rock and sand and rinse very well.
100% new salt water i would recommend.

I don't QT corals, if u are concerned with hitchhikers then I'd just remove the coral from plug it came in and attach to new plug prior to adding to tank after acclimation.

Not rinsing with fresh water just new salt water but keep in mind you can't let the rock and sand dry out. So me personally would keep the water with the rock and sand with water movement until ready to use. You also need to feed the rock to keep it useful. Hth.

The life in old water will die shortly. But I do keep some old water to hatch brine shrimp or in an emergency. I always have a couple of gallons stored. Just put it in a container and forget about it. It doesn't need any help from you.

Alright, ill go with fresh saltwater and use seeded live rock from my current display :) Thanks guys!

Yes...rinse with tap water then final rinse in RODI. It wont harm the bacteria.

Youll go through a lot of salt water so its expensive and un needed to use salt.

I meant 100% new salt water for the new tank.
