Currently I have a 32g Brute trashcan I store my RO/DI water in that has a pump continuously running in it. I use about that much each month and just refill as needed. I have been thinking about buying another 32g brute container to hold saltwater that I would mix and make in said container and also run a pump in to maintain flow.

How long would that saltwater last in this container so it would still be safe for my reef tank? Would all the essential properties of the saltwater for a reef tank sustain in a trash can?

In my experience you can keep water like that for quite some time (i.e. a month) as long as it is circulating. At least I have never had issues with it. Just heat it up before you want to use it and give the SG one final check.

Here's what I've done. It works great. Top barrel is RO/DI, bottom is salt water. I use a pond pump to mix it and pump it upstairs when needed for the water change. I turn the water over in the salt water barrel every 6 hours for an hour with a timer.

I like your set up.....

That's a bad*** setup! That's my goal but its hard in FL without a basement. I have a very small closet to store my goods.

This can be done on a smaller scale. I modeled it after two 10 or 15 gallon containers set next to each other that I saw on some other post a while back. I'm not sure how large your tank is, but if you had something that only required a few gallons for weekly water changes then you could really downscale the whole set up. Also, I drop a heater in the lower barrel to preheat the water to match the tank water.
