Storing used carbon / chemipure blue?

I'm running ChemiPure Blue in a 26G AIO, but I'm battling low nutrients / dinos, so I'm about to pull it out (I've seen contrasting views on whether it strips phosphates). Can I store it back in its jar for future use, or do I have to just throw it out? I'm concerned about it becoming a petri dish and poisoning the tank if/when I put it back in. Same question as to regular carbon.
