I can't give you the difference in the controllers. But I do have the typhoon controller I got with my Steve's LED upgrade on my BioCube.
Here's what I know about the typhoon controller:
Mine has four independent channels
Each one can have its own start and stop time
Each one can have its own Ramp up and down time. If you set it for a 2-hour ramp, it will be 2 hours up and two hours down from the start and stop time.
each Channel you can set the minimum and maximum intensity. So if you had a blue Channel and wanted a Moonlight all night you can set a 2% minimum. I don't but it's possible.
The controller will retain its schedule through short periods of power loss. I ran a three day blackout once and had to reset everything.
It is connected to LEDs through a six or eight pin lead system. So you couldn't just plug an Outlet into it.
All in all, it gets the job done. If I knew then what I knew now I would have probably just got a better light system and pulled the lid of my Biocube. In fact we were just talking about doing that. I have a few extra xr30 Pros laying around.
Hopefully this helps you. Maybe somebody else has some info on the other controllers to compare.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at Steve's retro for my RSM130. Do you find yourself changing your setting often to find the right color Or just in the beginning? The ramping function is what I feel I will use the most, since I only see my tank prior to 6am and after work on the week days with only moonlight and on the weekend. If I can enhance those times with low % daylight vs. algae booms from 12 hours of 100% is the goal.

Definitely just set it at first and forget it. The Retro on the biocube only uses two of the channels, so I have basically a white Channel and a blue channel that has some different colors mixed in. Just yesterday I put a par meter in it and adjusted the percentages. I wound up with about 90 95 on the blues and about 70 on the white Channel to get a decent par level.
Setting the controller is pretty awkward and clumsy. There were no directions so it took a little to figure it out.
The only other experiences I have with light controllers since I got this are a Reeflink for Radions and I have the Current IC loop system. Both of these were also a bit tricky to learn even with the newer technology.
