So a friend and I were watching this video from Parkers Reef and we like the way the gentleman elevates his zoa frags off the bottom. He says it helps them grow and helps keep them clean. Cool side effect is you basically wind up with a "zoa tree" as they grow. In thinking of a more "elegant" method of achieving this effect than gluing multiple frag plugs together I started to think of what I could use. I already have quite a few stemless frag discs laying around and started thinking of what to use in between them. I think the idea I like the best is just using a stem and gluing a disc on either end. At first I thought of using acrylic rod but I think that would get dirty, nasty, etc so I am after something else.

What I settled on is some kind of ceramic rod, made from a similar material to standard kiln fired frag plugs we use, that i can cut to whatever length I would want it to be. Has anyone seen anything like this? All I am able to find are high end rods for some scientific purpose I do not understand. :) If someone knows where to find something like this I would love to know. Or maybe someone out here has a better idea? I am going completely off the top of my head here so suggestions are welcomed. Thanks!

There are some pretty cool 3D printed options for this exact concept on thingiverse. Search for it there. I haven't personally made this yet, but I could test it out and report back.

Thats a good idea. Will see what I can find on there but I am not terribly familiar with how Thingiverse works. Time to learn something new. :)

What about using reef epoxy? You could cover the acrylic rods to make them look more natural. Or you could just make pillars with the epoxy itself. Note that any material is going to grow algae on it. You may have to clean them periodically until the zoas spread down the stem.
please post pics of what you come up with!!
