@Randy Holmes-Farley if I save my used GFO and dissolve it in HCL will that produce a Ferric Chloride solution?

(Not using the Ferric Chloride solution for aquariums but for one of my other endeavors)
 
Yes. Plus whatever was bound to the GFO, like organics, bacteria, phosphate, silicate... Those will all be much lower than the iron concentration.

Thank you Randy, I don’t think the impurities will matter much since I will be using the solution to etch tool steel. :)

Sounds good. Check the pH after making it. Presumably you have a pH specification.
