I've been dealing with something unusual for the past year or so. Some of you may know Im in the process of setting up a new tank and while that tank cycles I have all the fish and corals from my previous tank in a temporary holding tank...

Every now and then the tank water gets extremely cloudy and this happens overnight. All the parameters are where they need to be and every time this happen I test the water and everything checks out okay but for some reason the water turns cloudy overnight. I have city water and use a BRS 4 stage RO/DI unit to filter my water. I was using Reef Crystals before but recently switched to Kent Reef Salt. The strange thing is that two days ago when I got up in the morning both my new tank and the temporary holding thank were both cloudy and neither of the tanks are connected together. On the temp tank Im dosing Carbon, Cal & ALK while on the other tank Im doing nothing since its going through the cycle, I just have a few powerbeads and return pumps on. I find it strange that this happen to both tanks at the same time when they don't share the same sump and are in different rooms of the house. I don't have any of those automatic spray air fresheners around the house and don't spray anything near the tanks so I can't think of whats causing this to happen.

*This was also happening when I was using Reef Crystals so its not the salt

I've read this could be an algae bloom but it happens at least once a month and now that I just started the cycle on the new tank it happened to both tanks at the same time which makes it even more strange.

any ideas as to why this is happening?

In that case, it sounds like a bacterial bloom to me. As to why it is happening in both tanks at the same time, I just say coincidence.

I guess but it happens at least once a month. What could be causing a bacterial bloom every month?
