Ive had my reef tank for a while now, because i had a algae issue in my tank a while back i started putting a towel over my tank to block out light when the tank lights are off, it did help a lot.
My question is, i still do the same thing now and was wondering if there is any cons to this at all?

If you have coral, they need some light to produce their food source. You could try reducing white light intensity also to alleviate this. Also add chemipure Blue to your tank which will keep the nutrients that support algae in check

I dont actually have a algae problem now. But still put a towel over when lights are off and take the towel off 2 hours before they come on. Just wondering whether just to keep it off now.

Any outside light is bad for reefs, algae city is the result, even it is only a small amount.
I would keep it blocked.
Thank you that is my thoughts as well, the corals still get their 10 hour light cycle from the led's

If you are referring to lights from a nearby window, You can simply block it with black construction paper in the school supply section at walmart. 30" X 36" sheet is 92 cents. Works well and you can trim to fit
