This morning I moved rock work around. A mushroom moved itself off a plug and I took everything out to look for it. I of course didn't find it. Anyway, I redid the rockwork when I added it back, and changed the flow around a little.

Fast forward 12 hours, I'm looking in the tank under night blue's and see a little ball floating around the sand. It's like a perfect little circle, such that I've never seen before. I immediately blame my kid, assuming he put something in. I use my 24" algae scraper to try and get it out to inspect. As I'm moving it, it starts to open into this stringy/gooey/slimey bright red (glowing) mess. As flow hit it (oops, I didn't turn off pumps), it spiderwebs into a nasty cloud that just kinda starts getting on stuff.

I was able to pull a small section of it out, but most of it got stuck on stuff. The part I pulled out was a clear slime with the red stringy slime attached. What in the heck could this have been?!

Cliff notes / TL;DR - Red ball in reef tank expands into nasty looking snot/algae.

What color was the mushroom? Could it be your dead mushroom decaying? Could also be Cyanobacteria. Do you have a picture??

The mushroom was gold, and has been gone less than 24 hours so I doubt it'll be decaying already. I wasn't able to get a picture unfortunately, by the time I went for a picture it was gone.

Sounds like the mushroom got tore up by something and you are seeing it's gut.
