I felt a little current while cleaning the glass on my tank today. So I grabbed the multimeter plugged ground into the common side of an outlet and stuck the positive lead in the water. I got ~58 volts AC.
So I unplug my wavemaker controller thinking the cheapo SUNSUN powerheads are the likely culprit. No change. So I plug them back in and move down the line. No changes. So I unplug the wavemaker controller and leave it unplugged then unplug the skimmer. Voltage drops to 13 volts AC. I'm no electrician but I did work at an auto shop for several years and had my ASE cert for electrical so I'm not oblivious. But everything I did was on DC current so maybe I'm missing something. Anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong or how I can figure out what's up? Is it possible that both the skimmer pump and one or all of the powerheads are due for replacement? I'm leaning toward just replacing the whole lot unless I can narrow it down somehow.

Unplug everything. Then plug in one item at a time.

@Brew12 has something to say about this.

Though the devices are DC controlled, they’re still AC powered. Glad you found the culprit. Get yourself a grounding probe too :)

Yea, thought those were the issue. Long ago I ran those also, had nothing but scary trouble with the wiring right at the powerhead itself.

For sure. I knew they would be temporary when I got them. And the wavemaker controller has already killed off two of the four pack lol
