Seems like the same thing that happens in captivity. If your reef doesn't have adequate nutrient export mechanisms algae will grow and smother corals. If the natural reef doesn't have the proper amount of fish, the same will happen. The fish aren't there to pick at the algae and it spreads. Eventually the reef has changed to an algae dominated reef and the corals are not able to compete.
 
I will have to give FWC a little slack from now on the limits and seasons they put into effect on the fishing off Fl's coast.
 
Interesting and sensible information, now let's hope it is put to good use.
