I very made a terrible mistake, new to reefing, been very patient through my cycle process, been religiously checking water quality making sure I have stable Parameters... I think I have aiptasia ........... When I was building the sump I decided to have a refugium, I was going to my lfs to buy some chaeto, a neighbour offer me some from his tank, first I said no thanks, he insisted, I said is it past free, he said yes, so in it went. 2 wks later I have noticed this growth, research tell me its aiptasia. I'm devastated. At the moment I only have cuc inthe tank. Your input or advice would be welcome, should I throw away the chaeto or are there other options ?

hi,sorry to say ,yes apstasia:(

remove clump w nem, keep close eye for more, can dwindle down as needed ,algae will continue to grow

If you remove the a small clump, just what the Aiptasia is on and it continues to pop up, drop a peppermint from a source that knows how to identify the correct genus. Keeping the peppermint in the sump eating just the Aiptasia will train it to eat them and you have yourself a good candidate for your DT just in case it pops up up there. Welcome to R2R!!! Honestly I’ve tried everything in my power to make sure Aiptasia doesn’t make it into my systems and I’ve never been able to completely keep it out. But with a little work it can be contained and taken care of.

agreed, aip will pop up at some point.
in the end, i think it's about controlling, not able to eradicate or making sure none will pop up later on.
good habit : not to buy coral frequently; quarantine everything; have some aip predators as a bio-control in tank will reduce the chances.

Devastated over some aptasia? Why?
I would bet almost anything that over a longe enough timeframe it would somehow make its way into your tank anyway.

Just remove it and if you see some popping up in your tank just get some peppermint shrimp and you’re good.

Just a heads up because it doesn’t seem to be very well known and I rarely see it posted. Silver scat once acclimated to salt eat it like candy. They are just ugly and get large lol. That said they are normally pretty easy to catch when you are ready to remove them and they rarely touch any other corals.

Ok thanks for the info guys, sounds like I'm over reacting, but this is my first crisis have not even got fish or coral in yet. I will pick the clumps out that contain the aip. No signs of aip in display tank though. Suppose this will come later

Aiptasia isn't a HUGE deal, it's really just annoying if anything. It's far from the end of the world. If it were me, I'd ditch the entire ball of chaeto and buy some from Algaebarn.

I'd toss the chaeto, clean up the fuge and start fresh. Seems like a lot of people just view it an inevitable and give advice based on that. You dont have to live with it.

Flatworms, aptasia, pistol shrimp, vermetid snails they are all life. Trying to keep life out of a reef tank is impossible unless you never add anything but dead rock and sand. Learn mitigation and patience. Get really good with kalk solution and a needle.

I admire your passion and I think your dedication will bring you great success IF it doesn’t make you quit first. You’re going to run into all kinds of challenges don’t get too upset about them, deal with them. Aptasia is a nuisance and can overrun your tank but it doesn’t have to. Research it and you’ll see you can deal with it like many of us have and continue to do so. Take it easy on yourself your tank will be fine.

Yeah do not freak about it. You basically have a slightly undesirable thing in your tank, but it is in an isolated section. Even if it makes it into the DP, no big deal. Whatever you do, do not bleach your rock or do something dumb that would sterilize your tank.

Reading this post you would think the OP caught ebola.

Dont worry bud, remove that sucker and move on. There will be plenty more "pests" that get in your tank over the years. They only present problems in an unbalanced tank IMO.

Yes, I say remove the chato and clean the sump.
With nothing in the tank it is unlikely the chato will live and grow anyway.
You dont want it to start breaking down and getting into the DT and spreading the Aiptasia as well.
