I have been using my washing machines cold water tap for my rodi unit because the cold has been broken on our washing machine. I just fixed it and now I need a new way to hook up the rodi unit. I have a zinc faucet splitter that fits perfectly on it that allows my washer and rodi to be hooked up at the same time. The water comes out 0tds like always, but could a zinc tap leak zinc into my rodi once at some point contaminating my water? Or is it not something to worry about?

Last stupid question, will the psi from a washer tap ruin the rodi unit? I dont know the psi from the tap its self. But from my understanding its anywhere from 20-100 because that's what my washer is rated for.

I did the same when I moved to our new home but I used a brass faucet splitter.

Re: PSI - when doing laundry I'm not making RODI water. My splitter has on/off valve to both.

Not a stupid question at all. I have been using the exact same setup for years, although I'm not sure of the composition of my splitter. There's a lot of nasty stuff in tap water (far worse than zinc), if the splitter is contaminating the water, then it will be filtered out with the rest of the tap water contaminants so I wouldn't worry about that.

As far as the pressure is concerned, splitting it off the same tap line should have little to no effect as well.

Zinc leaching not a concern unless you're on private well and water is acidic...don't know values of pH to affect it though. Municipal water is treated to prevent corrosion. I use a splitter as well. No issues from washer.

I would not worry about the zinc leaching, because even if it did, it will be removed by your RODI unit. As for the pressure, at low flow rates like an RODI, the pressure will be the same as it is anywhere in your house. It might not run while the washing machine is running though.

Hmmmmm...will RODI remove zinc completely? I never thought about that...RO will remove 98 percent or whatever rating is of course. But DI resin only removes ions. Is zinc an ion naturally?

Not that I'm overly concerned about it. Not sure I've ever read about zinc poisoning a tank from pipe leaching.
