What's going on everyone!? Hope all had a good Easter! Alright, so I got a stylophora frag about a month and a half ago and it's now looking like its starting to turn white just a very little bit on the bottom! My parameters are as follows:
Alk- 10.9
Ca - 430
Mag- 1400
Nitrate- 0 ppm
Phosphate- 0 ppm
Salinity- 1.023
Temp. 77.6 always

I recently started dosing red sea reef energy a and b and it seems to really help my ZOA's, palys, frogspawn and Duncan a lot! All growing like crazy! But this stylo has grown a bit but just seems to be turning white a little on the bottom! I'll try to get a good pic but have crappy cameras! Was hoping a advance aquarist in sps could help me out as this is my first sps! Thanks in advance!!!

What lighting do you have it under? Does your alk level stay pretty consistent? I would slowly up your salinity to 1.026

I keep HO t5s on with a mix of some orbit marine ic led. I keep the led just for sunrise/sunset effect than the t5s kick on and than off at 7pm than LEDs slowly ramp down till about 10pm ...and I use red sea coral pro salts and have tried to slowly bring my salinity up to .26, but no matter what I do I cannot get it to go up! It freakin stays right there at .23! Any tips? And attached is a pic of a graph I made when switching salts! At first its kinda up and down, as I was getting used to getting things stable, but yeah Im pretty sure my alk stays pretty stable! What would you consider a stressful swing? From 10.4 to 11.4?

Nice graph! :) looks like it has stayed pretty stable. No major swings. I would look into your salinity. Your best course of action is to top off with saltwater instead of ro/di water to slowly raise it up.

Thanks! I figured I would make that graph so I could visually see any swings in the past so I can tweek my routine so things are more stable! Has really helped! I try not to mess with anything and putting my hands in the water,I've found that when I dont mess with it they all grow crazy! For example, I have had all my zoanthids and palys pop out 3 to 4 heads in the last two weeks!!! Im going to keep trying to raise my salinity, but I wonder if the stylo turning white at the base a little, has anything to do with the red sea reef energy? The cautions on the pamphlet inside said that signs of under dosing could cause bleaching at the base, have you ever dosed this stuff?

Unfortunately I have not. But we can see if anyone from #reefsquad has and may provide some insight.

So I guess topping off with saltwater should not swing my levels...right? In the time it takes for the water to evaporate the levels would of gone done correct?

OK cool, thanks! What's reef squad?
here on R2R we have a dedicated team of users just like you that specialize in different aspects of reef keeping. They share their knowledge and experience to assist users both novice and advanced. We call these users the reef Squad

The seachem dip is fine, it won't hurt the coral and I have found that a lot of the times it stops whatever is causing the issue like an infection, bacterial or such, Thing is you can take the wait and observe approach or dip it now and see if the coral starts rebounding, instead of hoping it doesn't keep withering away.

One of the possible reason can be the low nutrients combined with high Alk. If you keep your alk close to 11 then you need to bump your nutrients a bit up.

How are you measuring salinity? You shouldn't have any problems raising it.
What phosphate test kit? What is your tank flow turnover per hour?

Well I keep the nutrients high, but up'd the amount of red sea energy a little and feed a little more of the coral frenzy and the white spot is now turning back purple! Also raised the salinity by a point......I measure salinity with a refractometer that I clean and make sure its on 35 every single time I check the salinity. I use salifert for phosphate and nitrate and I have over 3,000gph flow going on in there with a wavemaker....

I’ve lost sps due to low nutrients from carbon dosing and they always started at the base and crept up the coral. Do you dose anything for nutrient control?

Don't dose anything but reef energy.....I run carbon, but other than that nothing else.....I moved it the best I could so all sides of the coral would get light so hopefully this guy will turn around! I really like this frag!
