Substrata

After reading Wy Renegade's thread on substrata, I am wondering if a crushed shell and sand substrata would work well for a reef tank. It seems like the combo would work with advantages from both.

I have read of other people using a mix of the two, would be interested in hearing what people's experience has been doing so, pros and cons.

Only thing I would be afraid of is getting a detritus build up in the crushed shell. How big are the pieces?
