I have seen many group buys for coral packs and was curious to see if anyone had a success story . In my humble opinion , when people get involved with group buys that is not local to the group that there not very successful . Ie.. When the grower starts to have coral die off , or receding , or the rate the coral grows is not fast enough for other purchasers in the group buy , it seems that the grower turns out to be the bad guy and but reaps the benefits of having the coral in their tank . I have had success when the group is small (3 to 4) and is local so when it is time to frag , there are no shipping charges. In The end the shipping costs are more than the coral's value . I read the sticky and there is some sound advice there, but I am looking for non-local group buy success stories .

You rarely hear the results on large group buys. When you have over 6 people waiting for a chalice to grow, it can take years depending on the type. By that time, things have changed and some sell of the colony for another Chalice to growout.

All I know is I went through the grow out thread the other day and there is plenty of drama to read. I would only do a grow out with someone I knew well and if the group was 3 people max. Local is huge. It much easier to pop by and take a look.

There is quite a bit of drama in the growout threads, however, I feel like the majority of this is due to lack of communication.
I myself am hosting a growout and unfortunately have been having some major issues with the acans in the growout as well as my personal collection. I've been providing my group with updates at LEAST once per week with photos as often as I can and they've been nothing but understanding and helpful. Sometimes stuff does happen...we all know and understand this.
I'm in another growout that is going pretty well, we've had some communication issues but overall I would say it's been pretty successful and I hope to reap the rewards of the growout very soon.
I have also had a bad experience with a zoa/paly growout where the grower did not communicate an "infection" until most of the pieces were lost and never provided any photos or asked for advice. He still has at least one or two pieces from the growout left sitting in his tank while the rest of us have nothing.

terrible idea tbh....
they usually pay top dollar for designer frags and watch as they plummet in price over the following months. meanwhile they have die off, slow growth etc....
major headache dont do it.

Personally I wouldn't do it unless it was local. There are too many unknowns in the hobby and bad things can happen quickly. Good luck finding more success stories of non-local growouts.

Our growout was doing great and then the grower stopped posting updates. Months later we find out that he had moved them to a new tank and lost most of them. We found someone else in the area to take over the growout, but things never really recovered and he can't keep with it, so now what's left is getting shipped to me. I hope in a few months we will have two chalices and some zoanthids to cut up and pass out, but that was out of the original group of two chalices and the zoas. That said, I would probably do another growout if I knew and trusted the grower.

I did three different growouts when i started this hobby. pretty much a waste of money. in all three cases the grower disappeared. i would never do another one unless its with a friend of my and we are the only ones in it.

That is pretty much how I roll!
Good communication is key. As i scroll thru some of these group buys , there are like 2 and three month gap between posts, money issues, backing out issues, tank issues, lost internet connection for a month issues, coral aint growing issues.....etc
