Urgg!!
Starting off. I have an odd tank that's over 4 feet deep. Due to the shape I cannot travel vaccum and instead have a ton of varried circulation to keep detritus from settling on the bottom. My sand is always clean, and I've had algae from time to time, but nothing wild.
Fast forwarding. I bought a struggling, bleached out, nem a month ago and have been slowly bringing him back. As his strength returned he started to wander, and I had to turn off 3 of my 5 MPs to keep him safe. The tank stayed like this for almost 3 weeks and got dirtier than I have EVER seen!!! Nbd. I pulled the nem out and placed in a different tank to give him better attention. After firing up all of the MPs i realized how nasty it had gotten. The algea on the bottom was SO THICK it didn't gently stir up into the water column as i thought, but instead was like MATS on the bottom. I had to run the pumps pretty dang high for 12 hours to finally clean it up (mostly). Doing so dug pretty aggressive ruts into my sand beds, but no big deal, right?
Well yesterday my favorite fish (scooter blenny) was acting really weird and swimming unhappily into the glass towards me. I noticed he looked oddly thin, so I fed the fish (had been on a limited diet for the past 4 days to fight the algea) mysis and he ignored it choosing not to eat.. since it was late I went to bed.
Just now I noticed he was dead.
totally heartbroken. Hes the GF and my favorite by a long shot! Friendly as all hell.
Since turning on the pumps I've also noticed my elegance is really upset, but hey, hes moody sometimes so nbd.
What's going on here???? Did I stir up too much at once causing death???? Hes only been in my tank 3 months, is there a chance he cleared out my pod supply and starved? He does eat mysis, but never more than a couple. He and the elegance are at the bottom, but everything else (coral and fish) is higher up and looks happy. Oh! And theres a new algae instead of my normal GHA that appeared near the top of my tank overnight. Cyano?
Pic one shows the remaining mess on my sand and the blenny.
Pic two and 3 shows a few corals higher up
Pic 4 is happy corals and fish lower
Pic 5 is top shelf algea with a filter over camera
Pic 6 is overall tank prior to the downhill slide
