Hello Everyone,
I've been having an issue for probably the last two weeks. My nitrates started going up and I'm still trying to get this in control. Currently they're at about 40 ppm. I started with a penguin bio-wheel 350 filter system. I have quite a few fish...3 damsels,3 chromis,a snaffin tang, firefish, sixline wrasse, and 2 saddleback clownfish,a condylectous,a long tentacle, cleaner shrimp,2 emerald crabs, a cc starfish and an arrow crab. About 4 days ago I swapped out the filter with an all in one sump/smimmer. It's a rapids rp3 wet/dry system with auto-fill. It seems to maybe have gone down a TAD but It's still an issue.
I'm brand new to all of this, although I do have a friend who helps me, but as you all know, no ONE person has ALL the answers! Anyways this tank had been set up originally for two years, then was transported to my house. We did half water changes in the beginning, but kept the same sand which was maybe 1 1/2 and like 3 pieces of rock that wasn't live at the time. It's been set up at my house for a little over 2 months now,It's a 55 gal, i'm running a rapids pro sump system, I have a power fan but not sure what model although It does create a good current! Lights, i have marineland LED strip 36inch (plan to upgrade)
SOO, what I wanted to ask you all Is what do you think about the sugar method? Does it work? If I did it for my tank what would the dosage be? (55 gal) Do you all have other idea's for lowering nitrates. I heard someone say to use a turkey baster before water changes? I know water changes help, but how often would you do them? Any of your ideas would be great! Thank you all in advance!
