I've got an established 29 gallon nano tank with 5 fish but I'm still a coral virgin. If you could suggest only one or two books that would help me best understand this hobby, what would they be?

Thanks for helping a newbie,
Kate

Kate, Not sure how long you been doing saltwater fish, but entering to a reef tank is a whole new monster. You will probably need to buy some more equipment to be successful with Corals. So I urge you to make sure the equipment you are now using will be enough to support coral life. (lights, filtration, and water flow) This book in this link is real easy to understand for beginners. The Coral Reef Aquarium From Inception to Completion by Tony Vargas: Books on Reef Aquariums

Both books sound great! Thank you two!

I know a lot of info is available on the internet, but I guess I'm an old fashioned book girl (at the ripe old age of 31- on this very day)!

Much thanks,
Kate

Well happy birthday! :D
It's not a book, but I heartily recommend Mark Callahan's YouTube videos. Let me see if I can find the exact link to his channel. I've learned a ton in an easy-to-understand format and his info is reputable.

Edit: I'm going to direct you to his actual site. There may be a button/link on the first page that says "enter site" or somesuch. You'll want to click that.

Reef Secrets by Nilsen and Fosså is a beautiful book and has extensive information on corals and fishes, including the environment they need and difficulty levels. I highly recommend it!

I did all my reading online, which is not to say in don't recommend reading any books on the hobby. I just didn't want to spend the $40-$60 on a book when uncoils spend that in equipment. Maybe that's a bad way to think, but I bought my tank in Feb '12 and didn't add fish til the first week of Sept '12.

Patience is the absolute best character trait in this hobby!

Agreed! I started my tank in December of 2011 and didn't add fish till the end of February 2012. First corals went in the tank at the 6 month mark.

My books include

Marine Aquarium Handbook -Martin A. Moe Jr.

Complete idiots guide. Saltwater aquariums - Mark W. Martin and Ret Talbot

Saltwater Aquarium handbook - George C. Blasiola II

And I highly recommend the CORAL magazines.

Book of Coral Propagation - Calfo, Reef Invertebrates - Anthony Calfo & Robert Fenner, The Coral Reef Aquarium - Tony Vargas, The 101 Best Marine Invertebrates and The 101 Best Saltwater Fishes both by Scott Michael, The Conscientious Marine Aquarist - Robert Fenner, Marine Reef Aquarium - Philip Hunt. Subscribe to Coral magazine. Bulk Reef Supply has a lot of good videos on YouTube.
