Suggest a fish! Ready to buy my first fish!!

So my biocube 29 is done cycling looks great, parameters are great and cuc is working. I'm ready to add about 2-3 fish. Can be different or all of same fish. I will be going to my lfs today or tomorrow and would love to here a bunch of suggestions. I want fish that are suited for the 29 biocube. Friendly fish. I also believe I have Copepoda and/or amphipods. My wife and daughter want them to be "pretty fish" lol. So please help and tell me your best beginner fish. Thanks!

Ocellaris clown. That was my first fish =) very cute, friendly, hardy little fish. I also like royal grammas and fire gobies. All good starters IME.

Don't be a fool like me and buy a clarki either! Ocellaris or percula only! Those are the peaceful ones! I bought a clarki by accident because the geniuses at petco told me it would be a peaceful fish. Went home and looked up info on it- brought it RIGHT back and got my ocellaris. Always do research before you buy!

I got a ocellaris clownfish for my first fish and extremely happy with it...plus I got the same tank as you

I like Cardinalfish and you can get tank bred species. they are pretty. remain out in the water column, good eaters and peaceful

Also, if I do go with clowns, it's ok if they don't have an anemone at first right?

I have two clown that dont host anything I got if u want to see the symbolic of clown and nems then go with a tomato clown they will host most nem.........

when I look to buy fish I look for something that has a purpose, like a starry blenny will eat algae a wrasse will eat any accidentally introduced pests you may put in your tank. imo- clowns are just a must have, a watchman goby will help keep some sand sifted and clean up around the bottom of the tank........


tank raised clowns have to learn to host. get a bta and you will have a better chance of the clowns hosting a nem.
but clowns are dumb and will host a plastic plant if thats where they feel safe.

a 29 would make a sweet nem and clown tank personally I like percula (picasso,platnium....) but I have a couple occy's (darwin and phantom) the percs seem to be more peaceful

other than clowns pink stripe wrasse /cryptic wrasse are a very nice fish

Thanks Mainereefer (btw it's my favorite state) yes I'm leaning towards fish that have a purpose. I have lots of little bristle worms I'd like to keep in check. So please tge more suggestions the better.

Get a sand sifting goby for sure. Trust me the "pretty" factor will disappear when your family sees how fun the fish are. I would also suggest a schooling fish like chromis, just in case. Those guys can survive nuclear winter IMO.

You got bristle worms? A six line wrasse will eat those up . I also lean toward cardinals... I have 1 pajama and 3 banner cardinals and they are always out and about. But you really can't go wrong with a few ocellaris

Do the cardinals get big?

Cardinalfish do not get very big and they kinda stay in 1 area of the water column and "float" there. I really like them, they are cool looking and very hardy.

I hav a 24 gal nano...first 2 fish wer the blue/green chromis. Died the same week. Then I got a pair of ocellaris clowns...1 died n the other is still alive today. My dad has an ocellaris clown tht lived thru 2 wipe outs. All fish except for tht one got diseased n died off. IMO u should get the clown. If u don't want an anemone, u can try a flower pot instead.
