I came across multiple threads on a variety of groups suggesting various modifications for the biocube. I will be getting a year old 14g biocube that will be home to a small mantis. Perhaps some corals at some point in the future.

Some of the suggestions I've seen include:
- ditch the bioballs
- use a media basket with things such as floss, purigen, etc
- replace the stock pump with a maxi jet 900

Obviously I want my aquarium to be as healthy as possible, but I don't want to make modifications that are not truly necessary to the health of the environment. Which (if any) of the tips are worth following?

I have a biocube 29gal but yah ditch the bioballs. The media basket isn't a necessary mod, i built my own basket and it works fine, but the shelves were just as easy IME. Replacing the stock return pump is a good idea as the one that comes with it doesn't provide very much flow.

I also removed the compact fluorescent bulbs and added a LED kit from aquastyleonline.com
