I have a Richmondi and Rhomboid wrasse and very happy with both.
The Richmondi is always brightly colored, but when the Rhomboid flashes he shows why they are called Golden Rhomboids....gorgeous.

What kind of bottom do you have?
Some wrasses like to bury themselves in sand and will not do well in a bare bottom or crushed coral.
Considering the size of your tank I would stick to smaller species.
Most important is to have every possible jumping point covered.
If there is any gap you can count on the wrasse finding it.

Leopard Wrasses are tough keepers. They require a very mature tank, with copious amounts of natural food source. Also, they tend to be pretty shy, requiring plenty of room, and sand, to get away from boisterous fish.

This depend also on you I've had mine since the beginning of my tank and just the opposite of everything you've said is true about mine. She eats out of my hand.
There good fish and depending on your source is a very easy fish to keep.

Okay, so the fact it's a 40 limits your choices quite a bit.
Those of the Paracheilinus genus would be okay.
Only some of the Cirrhilabrus genus would work; those less than 3.5" at maturity.
Some of the smaller Halichoeres could work, provided you have a sandbed.
Any Wetmorella species would be fine.
Yes; would be a fine choice.
No; not suitable for a 40 and also are a rock-moving terror at maturity (it's other common name is the rock-mover wrasse for a reason!).
No; no leopard (Macropharyngodon) is suitable for a 40g tank.
