Suggestions: 120 Gallon - Sump and Skimmer

Hi Guys,

I'm starting my first big tank and I need some help trying to find the best skimmer and sump for my system. The tank is 4x2x2 and I would like to play with the triton method in the future so compatible sumps is a PLUS.

Can you give your inputs on some sumps and skimmer for a tank that size?

Also, which return pump should I buy and where do you guys buy good plumbing?

I have a 120 and am currently using an eshops r-200 sump and sicce syncra silent return pump. I love the pump and the sump but if I could pick again I would choose a larger sump like the r-300, or a different brand altogether if I planned to use the same sump for 5+ years.

And for a skimmer I am using a reef octopus 152-s and I love it.

do you think I can have a good refugium and filtration using this sump? I've seen so many fancy stuff with like 4-5 chambers for different stuff.

The most important question here is what's your budget? Depending on what that is ppl Could offer better suggestions.

If sky is the limit I suggest a @geo Geo's Reef sump. He can work with you for equipment such as return pumps and skimmers as well if need be.

If on a budget a eshopps sump would work, but I'm not sure how that will work with triton since you will need a nice sized fuge for that.

Trying to find something cost x benefit that wont bring me headaches. As far DIY, I have "ZERO" experience playing with acrylic. So pretty much what I want to do is make something functional but with good quality without selling a kidney LOL.

The eshops one I have has a small refugium area, so if you are set on a full blown Triton system I would go with something else. But I think eshops stuff is very good value unless you have specific needs or features that you need.

The Triton method was just a thought. If that causes the equipment to get WAY more expensive I'll pass. I'm looking at the R-300 right now and it seems pretty nice. Also, for my return pump would a VECTRA S1 be enough?

Lights I was thinking on two hydra's 56 since I need something white and the radion only comes in black right?

Just standard white pvc I painted, and in my post I meant pre-cut baffles. It auto corrected that lol

I ended buying the RO 202-S. I remembered I had some credit on amazon and ended up paying 149 for it.

Will this skimmer work for 14-16 fish?

I use a forty gallon breeder sump, big fuge compartment and an aquamaxx q-3. I think it's a good setup for a 120 gallon.

I’m running a Vivid’s Custom Sump 36”x18”x20” along with the Simplicity 240 Skimmer on my 120 along with the Triton method.


The sump came with the tank, but runs about $690. I’d recon a Trigger Triton Sump or even said above, a 40 Breeder.

I was on a slight budget.. just married and moving into our first house. Simplicity 240 has definitely been amazing for the price as it doesn’t break the bank. It’s also rated for a 120 on a heavy bioload. So perfect choice.

Since my sump isn’t setup for a refugium, I chose to instead go with a Chaeto Reactor which has worked okay. Wish I could have a full chamber for solely a Refugium so I could “properly” run the Triton method.

Nothing fancy like above. It in due time, I’ll likely add a better sump

Absolutely loving it. Such an easy method. The only real maintenance I have is cleaning the Skimmer cup and trimming Corals.
