I’m going to be placing a check valve on my return to stop he siphon created when power goes out. But my over flow will continue to drain which is okay I have space in my sump to handle that water. BUT when my return kicks back on what do i about the siphon i have to manually create for my over flow? Because my return pump will suck all the water out of sump and flood.

Besides that, that is the downfall to having an hob for overflows. I'm sure someone has figured that out but I'm not sure hope that helps some.

Your siphon should automatically restart. I have the eshopps pf300 and it starts right back up when return flow comes back.

Depending on the power draw of your return pump 1 or 2 1350w UPS power supplies will hold you, beyond that a back-up generator.

I use both, the 2 1350w UPS's take care of the short term power glitches which happen quite often here and the longer power outages which have lasted up to 7 hours from downed power lines which are handled by my 12kw diesel generator which kicks in automatically after 2 minutes and has enough fuel for 10 days of continuous use.

Last night there was a power failure here just east of Dallas, started at 10:30 pm CDT and ended at 1:30 am CST (not exact times but close enough). The UPS power supplies did their job as did the back-up generator.

Back-up power is a must have in this hobby.

Which ups do you use?

Overflow boxes should not lose their siphon simply because the water stops flowing. I basically "cause" a power failure every single day when I feed my fish by turning of the return pump. Not once has my external overflow box ever lost siphon.

If your overflow box is losing siphon every time your power goes out, there is something wrong with how it is set up and configured.
