Suggestions for dimensions for a custom 500 gallon tank

The best dimension is the one that will fit in the space available.....long and thin, or short and fat!
A friend has a 600 gallon in an average size room and the dimensions are 72X60X32 inches.....works well. If you have a long wall, I'd go with an 8 to 10 foot tank to allow those tangs to fly down that long length.

Considering a "reasonable" depth one suggestion is about 120" long 32" wide and a depth of 30"...
No idea of how "ideal" this is but it keeps dimensions in a more err.. customary ratio..???
3/4" glass for sides..1" glass for the bottom.. rough calcs...
Your depth is the main determinate of glass thickness ..and cost of course..
Shortining the length and widening the tank doesn't change glass thickness much..

I like height to tanks so mine is 43" tall by 5ft square, but as said it's a bit like asking for a favourite ice cream flavour.
And like many tanks at this size it'll be a custom made solution.
Start with what you want to achieve (assuming space is no issue?). Then factor in your limitations like you prefer shallow tanks for easy access or that you don't want flow pumps on display (size can effect if you can achieve that with powerheads vs CL).
Overall a big tank like this needs an objective, some vision of what you want to achieve.
