Okay, I am on the verge of judo kicking my overflow on the tank. I never noticed how noisy it was until just a minute ago. Now, I do not have the commin problem of sump noise, nor do I have a noisy durso. The noise that I am getting is the water falling into the actual overflow of the tank. I cant dial the flow back, even so, I dont think this will help. On the built in overflow box, it has the "pre" or "surface" skimmer on the top of it, aka, the little slots.

The water falling over that into the actual overflow portion of the tank is what is making the little water fall noise. If I can rid that noise, my tank would be just about DEAD silent. Its not terrible, but very noticeable. Any ideas on how to prevent it? I would prefer not to put filter floss or a pad back there to pad the water falling. I think that would be a pain because it would have to be changed every few days.

Ideas?

It is a marineland 93 cube with the overflow on the back left corner of the tank. It is factory drilled in the bottom.

Easy just make your durso higher so the water level in your overflow box is higher and you won't have any noise at all

Your standpipe should only be slightly shorter than your overflow box top openings so the water does not fall far.

Its going to be difficult. I can't raise my durso any higher as it will stick out the top of the tank. I am topless on this set up so I would rather not see pipe sticking out of the overflow. I am trying to figure it all out though.

How about some photos? If the standpipe is that tall you should not have noise issues.

Hope that helps some. I changed the plumbing out today and plumbed two manifolds in. Since the carbon is running now, its not as loud but still noticeable

Do I see a check valve on your return? You are headed for disaster if so, they have no place in a reef tank and are a false sense of security at best. Get it out of there ASAP. As long as your returns are close to the sufrace only a very small, easily calculated amount of water can possible backsiphon before the return is exposed to atmosphere and the siphone breaks due to an air gap, the most simple and foolproof method of backflow prevention know to man and it takes zero maintanance and cannot fail or be defeated. As long as you keep a small amount of room in the sump to contain the extra from the display a flood is about impossible and you can sleep soundly at night.

Yes it is. I have run one on my tanks now for a bit over 7 years. I run one on this tank because of how low one of loc lines sit in the water. If it does fail, I'm still good with the water volume in the sump. So if it does fail, its no biggie at all.

Still not good idea, you won't find ery many in use and most of those are by people who don't know any better. I cringe every time I see one.

I have a Super Easy fix for all your noise problems. Take a piece of clear tubing like 3/8 or 1/4, about 14-16 inches long. Now just drop it down the center of the overflow tube going down into your sump about half way or a little longer. Make sure to clip the remaining side to the side of the overflow box with a bag clip or a clothes pin. The hose will break the cycle of the water dropping down and silence the sound a lot. It will take about 1-2 weeks for the piece of hose to break in but man it is almost silent. Try you will be shocked... good luck!
