Suggestions on plumbing for nano sump

I have been looking at various photos of sumps and most have valves installed.

My return will be pvc direct shot down to the sump. maybe have to use 2X 45's to get there. Why do people use a valve? Is that for noise?

Return pump will be small and sized for what I need. Again a direct line to the display.
Planning on plastic tube from pump to pvc union then direct to tank.
Only need for a valve would be to restrict the pump?

Would also help if you need to shut it off, so the water does not back flow into your sump. This depends are where your return line is.
And yes, you could restrict the pump if you wanted.

I plan on having means to prevent backflow.
So I keep thinking I dont need a valve.
