This is my first time starting a new conversation but, I am really heartbroken over a baby blue hippo tang (1.5"-2") that committed suicide/ had an assisted suicide in an Vortech MP40.

I removed the sponge filters off the MP40s and cleaned them like usual, however this time I did not replace them so soon. It was nutrient transport time and the 120Gallon needed the fish poop to get to the overflows and down to my rollermat so I figured I would leave them off for now and replace them once the water calmed down a bit. THAT WAS ALL IT TOOK. When I finally noticed about an hour later, my little blue hippo tang had made his way into the slots on the side of the MP40 and gotten pushed up against the front of the powerhead where the plastic blocks the front (where the water comes out). He was a bit scarred up and I could tell he went through the propeller. It was as if half of his body was incapacitated. One of his fins was moving and I thought he might just be stunned and come back, but he sank to the bottom where he spent his last few hours breathing heavily and doomed to lay on one side until he finally died.

I did not know what to do with him after I found him injured. Should I have snapped his neck to get the pain over with? Should I have flushed him to his quick death? I keep asking myself if I should have let him suffer like that just dying at the bottom of the tank.

What would you have done?

Opening a can of worms here. There are a number of ways, from what I've read I believe its clove oil that basically puts them to sleep for the long term if you know what I'm saying. It's the most painless. I think flushing is the worst way. I guess if there is no hope and the fish is beyond help and in pain, the old smash its head or cut it off is probably the quickest. You're going to get a lot of different views. I guess in the end its what ur comfortable with. Like I said, my opinion, don't flush

I would never flush a fish unless it was 100% dead already.

If my fish was injured to the point that recovery was impossible, I would put it out of its misery. Whether that be running over it with my car or something less messy, whatever is quickest and pain free, I don’t know what exactly because I haven’t been faced with making that decision.

Fish don't really feel pain. If you can stomach chopping it that would have probably been ideal.

i would probably isolate it in a container and let it die. you should get a 3d printed cover for the mp40. much better than the foam ones.

With you’re car why can I totally picture that

Im printing mine now... lol
I actually have a 3D printer and already thought of that.
Thanks for the idea though.

BTW IF ANYONE WANTS A CUSTOM MP40 or MP10 cover, I can make them for you. Your choice of color.

Please don’t ever flush a live fish. I’d imagine it would be a horrible death. A quick chop would probably be best but I just can’t stomach it. I’ve had to put a fish down once and I used clove oil.
I should also say that I’d only ever put a fish down if I was sure there would be no coming back.
Sorry for your loss :(
