As we approach summer time and elevated house temps, wondering where the most effective spot for a fan would be, blowing air into the sump or onto the surface of the tank water? Would imagine you’d get better evaporative cooling with the surface of the tank due to the area it can cover, but wanted to consult the masses. Would prefer it in the sump if it was comparable…

Or both if the temp gets really hot although I agree with the primary fan being over the one with the most surface area

An alternative is to freeze 2liter bottles of water and rotate frozen bottles in the sump. But it's a lot work bc the bottles need to be switched out every 12hrs

Turn your house's AC on. Can't afford AC? Then why are you in this hobby?
Ah yes, didn’t take long for a passive aggressive comment to come out. Like clockwork. Not that I feel any need to answer you, I will.

-I do have AC’s
-I can afford AC
-I like this hobby

I’m NOT, however, going to put my AC’s on in May.

You should buy a Ferrari and park it year round on the street

My point.... quit being CHEAP in a hobby that REQUIRES laying out money.

Keep your house at 72° during Spring, Summer, Fall.

Any excuse is just screaming that your cheap

Sorry for being blunt

.
It was a fairly simple question that other people answered. Lots of folks put fans on their tanks. You’re the only assumptive one here, saying I’m cheap because I was looking for the best placement for a cooling fan? Ok, got it.

You’re not being blunt, you’re just literally going out of your way to give someone a hard time about something incredibly ridiculous.

But anyways, appreciate your frozen bottle technique comment. I’ll be sure to grab an empty water bottle out of the cup holder in my Ferrari.

I have 4 4" fans in my canopy that turn on at 80 and blow across the top of the tank.

I also keep 6, 4lbs cooler blocks in the freezer. If temps gets too high I rotate 2 at a time every 3 hours or so in the sump. This allows the block to cool the tank and gives them time to refreeze.

Thanks, that’s helpful.

Something else to think about, i cool my tank with small 60mm fans with a usb connection plugged into my temperature controller, we have alot of rolling blackouts here in the summer and the usb plugs allow me to connect them to a powerbank if the power doesnt immediately come back on.

I suppose its a mute point as you should have solar panels, whole house generators or at the very least your own nuclear powerplant if you're in this hobby.

I have a 3 head fan getting delivered tomorrow I’ll be hooking up to my Hydros. I also have a generator and my tank on a separate GFCI breaker so it will be easy to keep running in case of a power outage, plus an IceCap battery backup to keep the pumps running until I can get power running.

Nuclear power plant will be built after my Ferrari is paid off, but I still need a garage built for that so it’s not outside all year round. Stupid fish tanks.

I have a 6" clip on fan across the top of tank not to mention aquarium chiller unit.

Home A/C does help
Fan helps
Making ice packs from zip lock bags effective. Fill 4-6 with water and freeze. When temperature rises, add a bag or two in sump. When they melt, take out two more and place melted ones back in freezer until temperature reaches safe range
