Going a little deeper on your question, what is your end-goal in cleaning your refugium? Meaning do you simply not find it aesthetically pleasing? I guess I always figured that if the point of running a refugium is to keep the “ugly stuff” out of the DT, then by definition the refugium would be where the “uglies” live... and ‘so-what,’ you know? ;)

I had a similar thing on my old tank. My sump had no refugium chamber so I made one with a fish water breeder net/box. Turned out that hair algae grew in the sump and not chaeto. I took my “refugium” out. The hair algae served the same purpose. I just pulled some out when it got too long. I’d say leave it. Your tank will be clean. It’s also a great place for pods to hang out.
