Hey guys I bought this used sump from a local and I was curios how this is suppose to go. Does the main drain empty into the small compartment to the left of the filter socks and it runs over and down the socks ? Or should I put the drain directly into each filter sock?

You can do either, but it looks like you're supposed to put the drain in the small compartment and allow the water to overflow into the socks.

If you put the drain directly into the socks, you may get an area of stagnant water in the small compartment. Could cause odors, but probably not a big deal otherwise.

Left of the sock. As long as that chamber is sealed off from the other side it will fill and over flow into the socks

I was gonna remove that baffle and then silicone the holder to the side and eliminate that compartment if I went that route.

That design is to have the water go direct to the left in that hole. The water then overflows into the socks and through the sump. The only thing to keep in mind is that it will create a pocket of debris that you can vacuum out before the socks.

If you leave the sump as it is designed, I'd just use it that way. At least there is a trap for fish if they make it into the overflow, and the trap is also an area of low turbulence to knock out detritus before it enter the filter socks.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I thought that was the case but wanted to confirm. Never really used filter socks but I'll give it a go this time around. See how much of a pain it is changing and washing them

I actually liked using the filter socks, but I ended up killing so many amphipods, miniature brittle stars and other critters that I eventually did away with them. The tank is actually doing better without them, I think, although having them in place to polish the water during cleanups was nice :)
