sump built! area for skimmer?

so my 40 gal sump is complete. still need to post pics. but the skimmer chamber only has a few inches surroundinng the skimmer itself. does there need to be some flow area? Id also like to put my drain socks in that chamber ...not sure if theres a certain amount of area needed for flow?

Probably not, as long as the skimmer can properly suck in the water and the water flows through the skimmer chamber actively...

The skimmer manual should tell you any specifics...
