Sump changes

I have a 40G tank with a 20G sump that I'm taking care of. I'm not sure what the thought process was of the guy who built it but it's just a protein skimmer and chaeto. It's a mixed reef tank, is that set up normal/enough? I always see post with much more elaborate sumps and filtration systems.

Yup. Some keep it simple. Some go extreme. And everything In between. Depending on size (actual space) in sump, skimmer and fuge only is pretty common.
