Good Afternoon,

I recently returned to the hobby after a short 25 year hiatus, and have set up a small nano tank.

During setup, I added sand. After everything cleared, I noticed some sand and sediment in my sump. As a slightly clean freak, this has been bugging me.

In the old days, I would just use a canister filter to vacuum up the sediment in the sump. But, I am wondering, has something better been invented? Or, should I just go buy Vortex canister filter and get to vacuuming?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff Fuller

Welcome to R2R Jeff!! and back to reefing:)

These day they call that a refugium with sand in the sump:D:D

You can alway use filter sock to filter out the sediment, but I would say over time it will go away as you system settles in.

I used to run canisters and HOB on all my systems. I really like running a sump now, all the heaters and other stuff that used to be in the tank are in the sump out of sight

Hello and welcome to R2R!

Glad you decided to open back!

We would all love to see pics of your tank!

Welcome EB to R2R & the hobby ! This is a great place to learn about all the changes .

Thanks for all the replies. I plan to do a build thread but here is a quick pic of the tank. It's small but a lot nicer than I could afford back in the day.

As you can see it is just set up. Has been cycling for a few months and just turned the lights on last week. Oh, that rats nest of wires in the back ground is being fixed this weekend. Wow do Apex systems have a lot of wires.

Cheers All!

Don't worry, the sump will get MUCH dirtier than it is now. Don't waste the worry. Mine the other day before a cleanup:

I am a clean freak like yourself, and just use a dedicated small shop vac that I use to vacuum out the sump during water changes (when needed).

yup, just use a shop vac on your next water change. I like to keep my sump really clean as well.
