Does anybody put cleanup crew in their sump? My sump is dirty like all sumps get and I’m just curious what everybody does. The guys at my LFS are split. One says let it ride and don’t worry about it, the other says put an urchin or 2 in there and let them clean it up. What’s your opinion?

Cerith snails finds their way down to the sump. I have a peppermint shrimp in mine (when I had aiptasia issues). and some nerite and nassarious snails

My sump is loaded with chaetos, so I can't have anything too big or anything that moves around a lot

I too would like to hear of opinions from those with experience. I would be too worried about any critters getting sucked into my skimmer or reactors. I just clean mine with a automatic gravel vac and scraper.

Im nervous to use a scraper for fear that some of the crud will get sucked up into the return and end up showering my DT crap.

I wouldn’t put snails or anything in my sump where it could clog my skimmer or return pump. Not worth the risk to me.

my sump is divided in 3 sections. It's the Trigger Systems. I covered the hole with plastic mesh to keep the critters from going into the skimmer section.

I've had snails for over 2 years in the middle section and never had a problem with equipment.

I've had snails that made it there on their own, bristle worms etc... I've thrown in a peppermint shrimp to hopefully ensure aptasia weren't able to hide in the sump. Also had ghost shrimp that escaped being fed to my lions and make it to the sump.

I have a few astrea snails and a trochus snail in my fuge. I separate the sections with egg crate so their confined to the refugium. I probably wouldnt recommend CUC in any area where they can get in pumps.

When all the GHA was gone from my DT, I moved about 20 Turbo and Trochas snails to the sump for cleaning. Would love to see what works best for others on a long term basis.
