My sump is broken up into three sections; 1)filter feeder 2)chaeto 3)return pump.

The first section(filter feeder) contains the heaters, a mixed sand rubble bed(maybe 1-1.5"). It has a smoked glass baffle to reduce light bleed from the chaeto section but enough light does get t hrough to grow some algae on the walls. Currently it has 5 cleaner clams. As I add more stock to the DT i'll hopefully be adding a couple flame scallops(with lima shrimp I hope) as well as one or two thorny oysters. I added one Astrea snail from the display to help with the algae growth on the glass. My elbow doesn't bend right to clean it all by hand :) Trying to think of something interesting to put in there to clean up any food that makes it down that's too big for the filter feeders. I'm considering one of those sponge decorator crabs(not the big ones the ones that top out around 2").

The second section(chaeto) obviously has enough light to grow algae on the glass. The tumbling chaeto actually keeps most of the bottom scoured clean but not the sides or the aquamesh that separates the chaeto from the return section. Same idea in that I'm looking for something interesting to live down there as a cleaner. Am looking at a staghorn hermit crab. Just not sure if it would be ok in a bare glass box with a log of chaeto spinning around.

What all do you guys keep in your sump for interesting critters?

Still curious what others put in their sumps. Peppermint shrimp? snails? hermits?

I had a couple of certh snails in mine with an astrea, it took a while but along with some pods it kept my fuge almost spotless:)

algae doesn't grow in my refugium and I've really had no reason to do anything aside from a once a year siphon.

Currently just have a couple of astrea to clean up the initial diatom bloom, but will have to move them back the display before too long I think.

Since in my sump it's about 20 gallons of space I figured why not put something interesting in it that would work in the display. In the "skimmer" section which for me is my clam/scallop/oyster section I just wanted something to clean up any food that makes it's way to the clam bed but is too big for them to filter out. Which is why I was thinking about a sponge crab. I suppose a nassarius snail would also work.

I feel like I'm scared to have any small snails/crabs down there for fear of getting caught in my skimmer or return pump?!

I never thought of adding snails to the fuge. Not sure why, seems like such a simple solution. Will definitely be giving that a try as i get tired of cleaning the sides while i wait for the chaeto to finally win the battle.

Im guessing snails wont each the chaeto
