if you see build up or reduced performance that's a good time. should be a part of your maintenance schedule every 3-6 months based on use. things like kalk drip near the return pump would require keeping an eye on equipment a little more often

a water & citric acid solution does the trick

ideally monthly (if there is a lot of consistent buildup.) otherwise, quarterly is fine. some folks do yearly.
