I am currently in the process of setting up a 135 gallon reef and currently working on the sump. The sump is 40 gallon breeder 36" L x 18" w x 16" h. As you can see from the pic, I am thinking of dividing up the sump into 3 section. The skimmer in the first section and where the overflow feeds into. I am debating if I should put a sock here. The water would then flow through over under & over 3 baffles. The center section is where the return pump will go. The right end of the sump will be for the refugium which will be fed by a line coming from the overflow line on the left over the skimmer with a ball valve. It would then also flow under over & under (3 baffles) into the center section where again is the return pump.
I was debating if I should compartementalize the sump the traditional way (skimmer, refugium followed by the return pump). This makes more sense to me. I think running 100% of the water through both the mechanical and natural filtration system is best. What do you guys think? Can you critique and send your suggestions please

Finally figured out how to load pic. Not the best but it works.

If your gonna have and ATO then make the return section smaller that way the refugium can be bigger. Also no need for 4 baffles coming out of the fuge. Over under over is fine. I just made a 40 b sump also but went skimmer/fuge/return you can see that I have quite a larger fuge area.

Jgraz. Are you having any trouble with bubbles in the return section? I'm putting my sump together and was thinking of doing over, under, over from fuge to return. But i could save a lot space by using just one divider from fuge to return.

In my 1year or so in the hobby I've had two sumps. Both were set up in the same manner as the one I posted. I have not yet had a problem with bubbles. The sump above will be my third and will go into service tomorrow. So I'll have to let you know. I don't expect a bubble problem. Most micro bubbles are caused by the skimmer. Inky sump they are knocked down by the bubble trap and any that get through are quickly dispersed in the fuge.

Thx jgraz. I was and still debating on have the return in the center of the sump. It makes more sense putting the return in the last compartment. Not to mention less congestion underneath the stand. Are u not worried about causing to much water movement in the refugium?
Did you use glass or acrylic for your baffles? What's the purpose of the cuts on the baffle leading to the return?

Not worried about flow through there. I might ever add a small PH to move it a but more. The baffles are glass. The teeth are there to help keep macro out of the return area.
