Sump critters

I am working on setting up my first sump. I have often seen people suggest "sumping" questionable reef inhabitants. Do these sump critters have their own partition or are they just let loose in the sump? My sump only has 2 compartments, so wondering what compartment these creatures would go in.

I would keep them out of the first chamber you dont want your drains to plug.

So they would ne ok in the return section? Thinking about finding some type of nonpermanent makeshift partition to create another small chamber for these guys.

There's no reason to home inverts or other livestock in your sump unless they're in a refugium.
