In researching sumps, I am seeing two different designs.

One that flows in one direction (overflow to sump, linear route to return pump). Waterbox, trigger system, etc.

Another designing have seen of sumps seems to be circular (?). With the overflow and return pump on the same side of the sump. Redsea, Octo sumps, etc.

I know zero about sump design (I am a total newb when it comes to sumps, I have been educating myself for a few weeks now). I would think a linear design is better? Does it matter? someone enlighten me please!

The process is the same on both styles.
For the most part its more about space, and will it do what you need it to do.

Whats is the most important feature you need?
Are you wanting a refugium, say to run the Triton method.
Then a large fuge space is key.

Do you plan on no fuge but a large skimmer?
Then that space should be larger with micro bubble traps.

So what is it you need YOUR sump to do for you?
What equipment do you plan to put in the sump?
Large or small ski.mer.
Large single return pump.
Dual small return pumps.
Filter socks or a roller mat.

If you have your desired equipment planed out then match the sump accordingly.

Another consideration is access to the equipment in the sump.
Skimmer cups need cleaned frquently. I see many designs that these are placed way in the back. Where you almost have to clime in and over the sump to get to the cup. Thats not for me.
The easiest access to frequently touched equipment is key.
