Hey all, I was thinking of designing my own sump for an upcoming build (unsure of gallons just yet). I am putting in all of the necessary equipment (protein skimmer, etc.), but I was wondering if anyone had anything that they like to include that other people generally don't. I would also like to see a design, if anyone has one, to give me a few ideas of where to locate equipment and general setup (I'm new to DIY sumps). Any help would be appreciated :)

Good luck

you need to know the dimensions of the sump first? what size tank is the sump for ? what are the dimensions of skimmer, return pump. will there be reactor pumps...... you need to know all this before trying to design the sump

for a basic sump like I have I used a 40g breeder tank drains in the right side chamber (11" wide, it holds my filter socks and skimmer) middle chamber (13")is cheato wall and macro algae, then baffles for bubble trap and last chamber is (11") filter media, return pump, heater, ato, probes....

Create a manifold off of your return pump and use a larger return pump than normal. You can then remove every single feeder pump you have (reactor pumps). Great way to cut back on heat, keep the sump neat, and give you more room to work with. Also, since you have a ball valve on every output of the manifold, you have more control and can quickly and easily adjust flow.
