Just curious to what kind of filter media and what not you guys put in your sump? Also curious on your opinions on bio balls, thanks!

I've got a good skimmer on one side, return in middle, and fuge on left with sand, live rock, cheato, and miracle mud. I've heard stay away from bio balls as they're nitrate factories BUT can't say I've personally had an experience in using them (just listened to everyone's cautions).

I have filter socks, skimmer, refugium, and reactors. No need for bio balls. Live rock, live sand is all you need. I have mangroves and some micro algae in the refugium along with live rock.

All I have is a skimmer, and the poorest excuse for a refugium ever. But it works for me =P Sometimes I will use a filter pad in between some baffles if there is something I need to get out. I check every night for snails that decided to take a slide through the overflow hose and before they try and meet the skimmer pump.

I use high loft poly fill in the drain section of the sump (to the right in the black bin). Then chamber 2 houses my skimmer, DIY GFO reactor and CPR tumbler with carbon and heater. Chamber 3 is just for the return. I perfer the poly fill over the filter socks because it seems to catch more. The filter socks wouldn't catch everything and the tank always seemed cloudy. Once I switched out to the poly fill the tank cleared up within a week and now they get swapped out every 3-4 days. When they do, they are rather nasty and need a good cleaning.

I run no media in my sump. Just a Skimmer, Cheato, Caulpera and Halameda. Nothing else.
No need for Bio Balls unless you want a Nitrate fighting headache in the long run. They are just tough to maintain and keep clean.

A protein skimmer, some chaetomorpha algae and two Phosban reactors, one with a half dose (5 grams per 10 gallons) of GFO and the other with a half dose of activated carbon. No socks, sponges, foams, balls or filters of any sort.

Skimmer , live rock and return. Thinking about adding a carbon reactor to clear up my water a little but that's it.
