Sump for Coral Tank?

Would anyone in their right mind source an expensive sump for a coral tank? Do you even need a skimmer for just corals?

Well in answer to your first very loaded question.

Yes plenty of people would do so. I think a sump Is needed yes,
many want show piece sumps vs just a functional sump.
Kinda seems your calling out those, that like show piece or expensive sumps.
Hey it is there money and choice.

I think a skimmer is a useful tool, there is no harm in implementing one in a coral only tank, but I see your point. You will find many who would agree that a skimmer would not be needed on a coral only tank and some feel that way on a coral and fish filled reef.
All in all this would depend on how the nutrient export is set up on the system.
I would run one myself, or at least have one ready to use if I felt the need.

You could do a full blown reef with a modified 2 liter soda bottle with filter floss in it and water being pumped through.... Ya your question seems kinda loaded. I really like having a sump

I put a sump on all my tanks except QT. Do I need an expensive sump on my tanks no. I’m more of a DIY kinda person and like to save money but I’m sure there’s people out there that like to spend money on quality equipment and I don’t blame them at all. Skimmers are hit or miss to be honest so like above these are loaded questions that will get different answers.

Hey, that's great. I think I'll definitely have to figure out a small skimmer.

Not calling anyone out. I sourced a brand new Seapora 60g last year for 275, and I know I want a Synergy Reef CL-34. Add in the $10 here and there for heater and probe/dosing holders, plus shipping plus tax - you are over $650. I want it. I know I want it; I just don't know if I want to pay for it. I was also considering Tideline and Bashsea. Synergy, definitely my apex choice. Tideline probably my 2nd choice. I think Bashsea increased their price.

Need?? No. All you Need for equipment is flow, heat and lighting. But you also Need to control water quality. And a sump isn't necessary to obtain that, but it really makes life easier if you add more equipment to aid in controlling water quality.
I would.. oh, wait, I don't use a skimmer on my coral tank. I don't do any filtration. But I do have a few fish and very importantly, a healthy balanced cuc in there that help me maintain my parameters. A "Coral Only" tank is actually harder to keep than a light bio load one.

Ok gotcha. If we could only read tonality.

Yes my expensive sump is a 150G Rubbermaid trough. Like $150.00.

I did go nutz on the skimmer its a Regal 300ext. Hurt the wallet $1,099.00 along with the Sicce Syncra Pro 1900 pump at $169.00 Ouch, but I wanted a large external recirculating skimmer. As its my intention to have more than one tank working off the sump and skimmer. For now my 140 is a bit small for the potential I have with the filtration.

Yup, I have a 150g Rubbermaid on my DT too. Do like recirculating skimmers also. I have a SkimzSK222. Not as popular as the SM202, but it completely disassembles. I've been eyeing a Deltec 3000i External, but I've sourced so much equipment in the last 2 months for a rebuild and the coral grow out tank that my wife put her foot down on the skimmer.

Happy Reefing!

A sump helps as a place to place stuff, the protein skimmer helps boost my PH. The added oxygen also helps with bacteria blooms, certain meds etc. and also allows me to dose in the tank where it’s dispersed before going into the display. Plus the added benefit of more volume and micro fauna. As far as cost I think a lot are overpriced as a sump can be as basic as a Rubbermaid tote it’s all in the eyes of the beholder.
