Alright, so I am upgrading tanks and instead of keep my current sump, figure I would make use of all the space in my stand...

Sump will be 23"x23", it will include the following -

Fuge - I have never done this, but it seems to work well for others, so I might as well make an area for beneficial algae to help the tank.

Live Rock Rubble Section - the more the merrier right? Its more of I have a spot for it, so I might as well throw some in there for good measure

Skimmer section

Misc. area - probably used as an additonial frag area, but could also serve as a banishment area for certain creatures.

A Cryptic Zone - I know the worlds seem divided on this, but I have read lots of info. on it and I figure it would not hurt to have one (it is small, and I am relying more on the rest of the filtration equipment and this kind of becomes something extra to just help out that much more. It will be fed by a small mini-jet and dump into the return section

A return pump section - this will also house a couple of reactors for carbon and gfo and kalk (all internal hang on reactors - two little fishies style)

The green lines in the illustration are baffles/bubble traps
The blue lines are sections with big holes drilled in them to easliy let water pass but serve as a small sectioned off barrier

The Teal ovals are bulk heads, that will drain into certain sections...

The main focus will be my skimmer as my main means of filtration, but the others are there to help in the aid of certain things the skimmer can miss.

I have no target flow in mind for the sump...my tank can be build to suit my needs in term of overflow, I will also gate valve the drain and return, to have more precise control

I am hoping people can let me know if this will work, wont work, what might need to be tweeked, etc. with this idea, before I have it built...any info would be much appreciated.

It looks good depending on what size tank it will go on. Just make sure it can handle the overflow from the tank if the power goes out. I love cryptic fuges. I always wanted to add one. From everything I read you won't get much in additional filtration unless it is around the size of the display tank but I just love the idea of the diverse bacteria and life it will add to the system. Also when you get the return pump, get larger one than you will need and then you can build a manifold and run the the canister filters off of it also and even feed the cryptic fuge.

any pods that the refugium produces will be caught by the Skimmer but other than that it looks good.

Looks good. You can probably just put the live rock rubble in the fuge and not worry about sectioning it off. I have my rubble in my fuge and it works well.

I'm.Not to terribly worried about pods as I have a lot in my tank as it is...but Its a thought for sure...

Also I know the cryptic zone wont provide much filtration, but I think it will beneficial non the less...

What about extending the cryptic zone over and have no buffles and have all the tank water run through it and have it drain into the pump return area...I worry it would have to much flow through It...thoughts?
