If you can spread the chaeto out a bit you won't have so much growing past the first couple inches at the top of the water line. For me every few weeks I just scrape with fingers along that line and knock out whatver is growing there.

The reason I suggest this is becasue of that float swtich. If you end up with snails in that thing it'll stick and not work as intended. You could also go with a different sensor but that's a little off topic.
 
ok the way i look at it the algae is there to consume the nitrates etc that are the results of the biological processing of the animal waste in the system...and then can be removed to eliminate those bound up nutrients from the system...adding snails to the sump will just have them eat the algae and convert it back to waste which will then need more algae to absorb it...

I'll trim it time to time.
Never had algae growth like this in the last sump
