Hey new to this site not new to the hobby. Definitely new to building DIY sumps for my fresh water tank. I built a set up in my 55g for my 60g shrimp tank. Turned out awful. I just bought an excessive amount of 3/4 acrylic sheets hoping to tear down my sump and rebuild it. I found this site while trying to find inspiration, help and recommendations. Please post pictures of a basic sump i could build please!! Ill try an upload my set up so far. Thanks again happy to be here!

Welcome to R2R! You'll find tons of info here from great users who are always friendly and willing to help. That said I'm a pre-made kind of guy lol. But there are lots of users here who have built their own. Hopefully they'll chime in for you ;)

Here is my sump for a 150g discus tank, made in a 40 g breeder. The top view also shows the glass plates that cover the sump and the position of the hinge (made from silicone) and the flap that separates the removable 2-part glass top from the relatively hard to remove cover for the pump chamber.

I run a Bean Animal overflow using 3 of the bulkheads (labeled open, emerg and siphon) and the others as indicated except that doser is now a purigen reactor. If I had it do to over again, I'd lose the socks and make the sock chamber and the first siporax chamber layers of foam filter media, then keep the last 2 siporax chambers. The sump works very well, but the siporax chambers are completely filthy and the socks clog in a day or two unless I use mesh socks, which don't filter much. Basically the socks just catch baby bristlenose cats that get swept into the overflow and keeps them until they grow large enough to put back in the aquarium. Otherwise, the discus eat them.
