I have a 120 gallon tank I want to setup problem is the stand I have for it does not have an open space for a sump to fit under it I have a 50 gallon sump,. What are my options? Can I set the sump up directly behind the tank leaving space behind the stand? or to the side of the stand? Has anyone done this or done this or currently do this? Any help is appreciated thanks

You can set up the sump wherever you'd like. Some people have them in an entirely different room! Behind it is fine but your tank will be away from the wall that much further. Beside it is fine maybe you could even hide it under some sort of table? Bottom line is there is nothing that says directly under tank is needed.

thats the problem i have dogs and are concerned with them trying to drink from it any recommendations to cover it like a table you said?

Oh btw, I do NOT reccomend this, but I even cut a stand once to make room for a sump. I then braced around it. Lots of ways to avoid this tho. Especially with a 120 gallon, much safer to leave stand intact

Could build a lid with anything from screen to plexiglass and just cut holes where equipment runs in and out
