I have purchased a Red Sea Reefer Deluxe 350 and wanted to add some bells and whistles to the sump just to familiarize myself with the different technical capabilities that the hobby provides. I know most of the stuff will be over kill on a small tank this size but my goal is to get familiar with what each component does & how it works so it will be easier to incorporate on a larger tank. The problem I'm having is I do not know how the sump works in relation to flow. In other words, what are the desired processes or stages of flow throughout the tank? Where do the in hoses go & what tanks do their out hoses go to? I guess this is a plumbing question but I can't find instructions on plumbing setups and how each piece of equipment relates to another. Does anyone have a good video or place to read how to set up all of these different components?

At the basic level, a sump is just a container that’s the lowest point of the water system. Just about any water tight and food safe container can and has probably been used as one. Two key points 1) always drain to a single low point as two low points never even out and you will flood at some point. And 2) pump to move water up, use gravity to move it down. This way the amount that gets pushed by the pump is exactly how much drains back into the sump (given no clogs/leaks).
