here is an idea I'm having for a sump setup.. Protein skimmer and sock tub to the left, round end tank with return pumps and.. Everything else to the right. Maybe some rock in the middle.

The local fish store in my hometown does something very similar. They use a tub like what you have pictured, empties into a huge filter sock, then they have a bunch of live rock and a skimmer in the tub, and then a return pump pumps it back up into the displays
