Anyone have any ideas on any diy options for a Sump for my 60 gallon fowler tank. I currently have a canister marineland 305 that I'm thinking about taking back to pet smart since I don't really need it.

A sump doesn't have to be complicated so try not to overthink it. I mean, you can.... some do and end up with a great and organized sump. I however, would end up with a mess and a headache! I kept it simple in mine with a filter sock, refuge, skimmer then a return pump. I did put enough though into it to be sure to utilize as much space in my sump as possible -with as much water volume as I could afford and still accommodate more with a power outage. Here's an example of something simple. This isn't mine btw.

Be sure to measure and allow enough room for your skimmer of choice, along with the correct depth in the water level for it. I recommend a refuge with macro algae as well. They are beneficial in keeping nitrates/ phosphates down which can be an issue in a fish only system.
